United States hold slim lead at Presidents Cup
There was a dramatic end to the opening day of the Presidents Cup in San Francisco, which saw the United States finish with a 3.5 – 2.5 lead over the Internationals side.
Justin Leonard and Jim Furyk fought back from being three down against South Korea’s Yang Yong-Eun and South Africa’s Retief Goosen, to be one up arriving at the 18th.
Leonard faced a three-yard putt for birdie and the match, however, subsequent confusion over whether the hole had been conceded led the 37-year-old to miss the shot when he was eventually forced to play.
The Americans went on to lose the hole and half the match leading US captain Fred Couples to tell reporters that he felt the finish had been “a little bit sour.”
“Did we think we were going to be up 4-2? Yes, we really did, but it won’t be the last putt ever missed at the Presidents Cup and it won’t be the last time a little bit of a reversal was done.
